Ah, the start of a new year—the perfect time for goal setting to take center stage. But as the initial excitement fades, those goals can quickly feel overwhelming or lose their sparkle. Traditional goal-setting models often focus on the “what,” but Positive Psychology—the science of happiness—teaches us that true motivation comes from understanding the “why.”
Not all goals bring happiness, and that’s because there are two types of goals: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic goals focus on external rewards like money, status, appearance, or fame. While they may bring short-term satisfaction, they rarely meet our deeper psychological needs. On the other hand, intrinsic goals are rooted in personal growth, relationships, and physical or emotional well-being—”goods for the soul.” These goals are more likely to foster lasting happiness because they fulfill our inner needs.
This doesn’t mean it’s wrong to desire something extrinsic, but by shifting focus to why you want it, you can achieve greater fulfillment. Extrinsic goals often fall victim to “hedonic adaptation”—the tendency to quickly adjust to achievements or possessions, leaving you wanting more. Intrinsic goals, however, resonate on a deeper level, creating sustainable happiness.
Take this example: Instead of saying, “I want to buy an expensive convertible sports car where everyone admires me by X date,” try reframing it as, “I want to experience a fast, smooth ride with the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, feeling free and in control.” By focusing on the why—the sense of freedom and joy the car represents—you’ll experience longer-lasting satisfaction that enriches your well-being rather than chasing fleeting validation.
